    Phobias

Phobias: what they are, how they are treated, and other phobia resources and information.

Phobias can range from mild problem to a phobia that triggers a debilitating panic attack. It's not clear what causes phobias, but studies seem to show that it could be connected to genetics, be caused by environmental mind set or programming, or that it could be caused by traumatic experiences, or by life threatening experiences.

There are hundreds of recognized phobias ranging from fear of the number 13, fear of air, to fear of the color yellow. A few of the most interesting fears that I have found are listed below:

  • Fear of missiles or bullets
I fear bullets too, especially if they are coming directly at me.
  • Fear of clothing
Now I understand why there are nudist colonies. :-)
  • Fear of good news
My local newspaper is a sample of this phobia. Only the bad news is ever printed.
  • Fear of ideas
I have worked on committees with a few people with this phobia.
  • Fear of learning
I wonder how many school teachers run across this phobia?
  • Fear of wealth
If you have this phobia, I can help you. First, box up all your money, gold, diamonds, stocks, and bonds and send them to me. You will be instantly cured and we will both be very happy!
  • Find Your Phobia

Browse a large list of phobias, or find a phobia that fits your needs, at the Indexed Phobia List.
I found that Mageirocophobia, the fear of Cooking, works very well when used once a week. It gets the family out to my favorite restaurant.

Treatment for phobias can range from behavior therapy, relaxation therapy, biofeedback, medications, hypnosis, and self help books.

If your phobia restricts your quality of life, threatens your safety, or causes you unhappiness or depression, then perhaps you should consider getting treatment to deal with the phobia.
